while in college, i simultaneously worked for a luxury spa, which is how i was introduced to aromatherapy. during my time with them, i learned how to use specific essential oils for specific moments and have personally experienced their impact.

the idea for the onyx house began at 3:00am in an old bostonian apartment whose roof leaked every time it rained. i wanted to move out, but i needed to finish college first and i was still 3 months away from graduation. there was a lot in those moments that i could not control so i focused on what i could.

i often got home from work late and struggled to stay awake to finish my papers before their deadlines. so, i started a self-soothing ritual to make sure my all-nighters felt less dreadful than they actually were. i would order takeout, pop a bottle of wine, put on some music, and light a candle. i found myself looking forward to these moments. because i recognized my ability to change my atmosphere, regardless of what was going on around me. i realized then, that if the candles i was using were also based on the benefits of aromatherapy, they would be even more beneficial. so, i began making my own.

the artistry of candle making took some time to master, but i have enjoyed every minute. i hope that these candles bring you the same amount of joy that they’ve brought to me.
